Miracle Story: Jonathan Taylor, CU Sol

When you donate to a nonprofit of your choice, you understand the feeling of fulfillment and reward it can bring you. For Jonathan Taylor, CEO of CU Sol, supporting Credit Unions for Kids (CU4Kids), and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) gave him that feeling. Especially since the cause became more personal than he ever thought it would.

From 2008-2018, when Taylor worked at Maine Credit Union League Insurance Trust, he participated in many fundraising events, including golf tournaments, silent auctions, monetary donations, and more. After attending a fundraising event, Taylor’s daughter was born 5 and a half weeks early without the ability to swallow. Forced to live at the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH) for about 20 days, there was financial stress placed on him and his family.

“CMN Hospitals and CU4Kids is near and dear to my heart… there is a connection between an individual’s physical well-being and the and financial well-being, and it’s important to support organizations that know this and can help,” stated Taylor.

While credit union and CMN Hospitals donations didn’t directly pay for the care they received, the support of the credit union donations were a key component in helping Taylor and his family making it through the month ahead. Below are examples of where credit union funds may go at the hospital.

THE BARBARA BUSH CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL (BBCH)

Children’s hospitals are on the front lines when it comes to protecting the health of future generations. BBCH is Maine’s only fully-accredited children’s hospital. Being one two CMN Hospitals in the state of Maine and sees over 100,000 patients each year. The neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where Taylor’s daughter was cared for, is the largest ICU in the state of Maine, holding 51 beds. Each year, philanthropic support from Maine’s credit unions and many other generous donors is allocated to the greatest areas of need.

These areas typically include purchasing state-of-the-art equipment, supporting pilot programs, educating caregivers, and implementing innovation. “Community support also allows us to offer programs like dog therapy, music therapy, and Child Life programming. Philanthropy allows us to do so much that otherwise would simply not be possible,” stated Kate Richardson, Philanthropy Manager for BBCH at Maine Medical Center.

BBCH does its best to serve patients, like Taylor, with top-notch medical services. “We always do our best to convey to the community that it doesn’t matter where in the state you were born, you can come to The Barbara Busch Children’s Hospital and receive excellent care -– and we’re so proud to provide this level of care,” stated Richardson.

Relying on the support of credit union’s, BBCH, and others through the CMN Hospitals network can tell stories of people who have been impacted, like Jonathan Taylor. Strong relationships with credit unions are essential to Taylor and, more importantly, the communities where they, their employees, and their members live. Supporting CU4Kids is being the caring community in their partners’ corner.
